Samuel Parks is a student at Mittlemen Independent High School, a very prestigious school that accepts students locally and worldwide. While not necessarily an introvert, the huge mix of cultures and languages, as well as the highly competitive academic atmosphere keeps Sam from paying attention to other people. He doesn't need to either, as Sam is part of a small six-person friend group, and a loving family
However, in the middle of Junior year, Sam meets another student in his calculus class: July Black. Intrigued by her unique name, he finally tries to talk with someone outside his tightly knit friend group. But to no avail, July completely ignores him. After asking his friends, Sam realizes he had missed a lot of school drama last year, finding out that July has been labeled the school slut, and that his friends look down on her.
Still somewhat interested in July's character, Sam continues to pay attention to her, but accidentally makes the shocking discovery that July self harms at home.
Now caught in a web of worry, for July's well being and his friend group's view of him, Sam tries to find a way to help July, while struggling to keep in a good light with his friends and the rest of the school.
