Melibea es un personaje que pertenecía a la alta nobleza, debido a ello,no estaba bien visto lo que hizo en la obra. Las mujeres debido a su estatus social, se mantendrían puras hasta el matrimonio y una vez casados pdrían tener relaciones sexuales con su marido. 
No obstante, Melibea hizo todo lo contrario. Ella muy enamorada y a la vez ignorante, mantuvo relaciones sexuales impuros con Calisto. Por lo tanto esto implica la pérdida de la honra y honor de la familia de esta. Cuando Melibea se entera de que Calisto falleció, ella decide quitarse la vida porque sabia que iba a tener consecuencias de deshonra. 
Se refleja una sociedad en crisis en la que se están perdiendo los valores caballerescos medievales  y la impotancia del estatus social.
