Amara "Mara" Shimada has a hard life. Poor, ugly, no father, an overworking mother whom she rarely sees, many health problems to the point she has only one certain thing in her life: she's going to die at 18 due to heart problems. Given how conscious she is of her own mortality, she resigned herself to a life of faith, doing good things and small dreams. 

Her short and predictable life came to a halt when she received the visit of a beautiful and strong princess from another dimension calling herself her "other self", named Tojava. She explains to her that her problems are due to a curse that was placed on her own world. She also shares the same fate as her, of dying when she's 18. There is a sliver of hope though: the man who placed that cursed ran away to Mara's world and she believes she can find a way to reserve the curse and cure them both. 

In order to do that, however, she needs to exchange bodies with Mara, because she cannot leave her kingdom unattended. Therefore she makes an offer to Mara: to exchange bodies and allow her to live the life of a princess for a year, while she works to find a solution to their problems. Mara accepts and she becomes princess Tojava, ruler of a vast empire and innumerous subjects that love her. 

This is too good to be true, right? Mara learns that not everything is what it seems...
