In the distant future, the world has been brought under the dystopian rule of a man named Severin Michaels. He has united all countries under his empire, which he calls Hel. Children are created in laboratories, and love, family, and friendship are thought to be dead, replaced by the need to survive. An oppressive government, rape, murder, and violence haunt this world. Hikari Railey was only four years old when she was "wired" - a process where wires are laced through the body and draw on one's own energy to produce a unique power. After narrowly escaping death, it is revealed that Hikari harbors an evil power within her. Drafted by Severin to serve him, her only friend is a boy named Elias who saved her when she was younger. By the age of nineteen, she has caused and seen so much death that she comes to view the world as a dead and weak place. But all of that changes when a rebel group called the ASGARD Recovery Program, an organization dedicated to restoring the world to how it was over a century ago, rises against Severin and his government. When Hikari finds herself suddenly thrust into ASGARD, and both sides yearn for her power, will she help the misfit band of rebels or heed this world's warning: "The love song is sung only by the dead man."?

It's been five years since the plague struck. Leah knows there are other survivors, but she's avoiding them. She is doing just fine on her own. Surviving after everyone she knew died has made her physically strong and honed her intelligence, but she is emotionally devastated. There is nothing to fear if you don't make yourself emotionally vulnerable. James has spent the last five years helping to build up a colony of survivors. He believes in the small town they have populated and its mission to save humanity from extinction. He and his small team of men find scattered people and bring them in. Over the last two centuries, women have fought for and won more and more rights, gaining equality with men. Society, law, and technology bolsters and enforces these rights, but now they are gone. Women's equality with men is over. There are just too few of them. They aren't lesser but greater, more important, more valuable than men. Men are expendable. Men can stay outside alone if they like, but all women must be brought inside the safety of the Colony and properly taken care of. James has been searching the area Leah lives in. Her time of solitude is up. Leah sparks something in James he's never felt before. He's not letting this one get away, certainly not twice.
