A novella for the Open Novella Contest III!

Prompt #26: "Every time she lights a match, she escapes into a new world."

My mother loved folk/fairy tales and would read them to me all the time when I was younger. Now that she's gone, reading these stories with her are some of my fondest memories. When I read this prompt, my mind immediately went to the "The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Andersen. That story always made me sad as a child, and I wondered how the girl's life could have been different had she actually experience the things she dreamed of while looking into the flame.

I hope you enjoy reading as Gwyneira discovers that life and wishes are more complicated that we initially imagine.

**Trigger Warning**
There will be some general violence and intimate partner violence in this story. Neither will be glorified, or graphic, but they are present. I know that these are unfortunate realities for a lot of people and that many read to escape the things they hate in their life and I don't want it to take them by surprise.

Open Novella Contest 2025! This is my interpretation of prompt 50. A supervillain has a midlife crisis and decides to become a superhero. But redemption might be harder than they imagined. ___________________________________________________________________ Cassius Vale has spent his life in the shadows, a man forged by necessity-no questions asked, no hesitation. A fixer, a ghost, a necessary evil in a city that thrives on corruption and despair. He's become an instrument of violence, a blade wielded by unseen hands, but when a job leaves an innocent girl staring at him with pure terror in her eyes, something deep within him stirs. For the first time, he questions whether he can be anything more than a weapon for hire. Can the blood on his hands ever be washed away, or is he forever stained by the choices he's made? As crime tightens its vice grip on the city and a new wave of chaos surges, Cassius stands at a crossroads: remain the villain in this twisted narrative or fight for something greater than himself. But redemption comes with a heavy toll, and the path to heroism is littered with foes who won't let him slip away so easily. In a world where justice is nothing more than a fading memory and second chances are rare as gold, can a man molded by violence ever transform into a hero? Or will the darkness that has shaped his existence finally consume him, dragging him back into the abyss from which he emerged?

Shocking her mother went along with it because of her arguments against it. Her husband's first kiss broke her out of shock and his transporting the limousine to New York piqued her interest. His promise to leave her rich and a virgin at eighteen, if she desired, still left her planning to run. He teaches her the magic of willpower controlling the universe. Letting her read his mind with it, she sees he has loved her for centuries, so she falls in love with him quickly. She discovers other aspects of time lived as well, both with and without him. The alien energy weapon killing him is one of the worst visions she finds. Seeing the carnage caused by the aliens in a few weeks is devastating via his vision. She can not imagine standing next to him as it actually happens. His visions point to her, preventing the invasion by magic. But he has centuries of magical experience, so what makes it possible for her and not him? She must quickly discover that uniqueness and use it to create a friendship with the aliens before the world as we know it ends. Caution: there are many sex scenes limited to a sentence or thereabout, suggesting you use your imagination to fill in the details. If you are not sexually active or seriously considering becoming so, you might not wish to read them. You also may not understand the reference, as most are as vague as I can make them.

☆ONC 2021 Honourable Mention and Shortlister☆ ☆One of Round Two Top Five Winners☆ ☆Multiple times featured☆ ☆☆☆ ☆This is a story about H. Ch. Andersen, about how he became a writer and why most of his stories are so sad and melancholic. Also, about why he never found real love... Yes, that's what I read about him (among other things)-- he kept falling in love with unatteinable women. My story portrays Hans Christian Andersen as a young, fourteen-years-old boy. It's set in Odense, Denmark, in the late summer of 1818-- soon after Hans' mother, a poor washerwoman, remarried (two years after his father's death) and shortly before he was sent to a school for poor children where he had to support himself. Where he became, to be able to afford his schooling, first a weaver's, then a tailor's apprentice, a singer, an actor and finally, once his excellent soprano voice changed, a writer. Hans and Louise, his (fictional) step-sister, seek refuge from a summer storm in an old shed. There, they meet Rosalind, a lost Flower Fairy. When they decide to help her find the Butterfly Fairy boy she loves and intends to marry, she takes them into a fantastical world of Terra Sonalis, her home. A land of dreams populated by fairies, goblins, elves, mermaids, talking animals... All those mysterious creatures that fuelled Andersen's imagination for the rest of his life. ☆☆☆
