Legilimency was used to magically navigate through the many layers of a persons mind. Those skilled in the practice were called Legilimens. One would learn the skill but a few witches and wizards were born with the aptitude for Legilimency.

Auriga Malfoy was born with the proficiency of a skilled Legilimens. From a young age she was taught in the talent of occlumency as well. It was a gift that her parents used to their advantage.
