When Mara Reynolds' little brother, Noah, finally finds a match for his much needed heart surgery, Mara's parents have to take him to Arkansas for the procedure. Not wanting Mara to miss so much school, Mara's mom calls in a favor with a family friend, the Watsons. While Noah recovers from his surgery, Mara has to stay with the Watson's for 4 months- specifically Ryland Watson, a boy in her grade. Ryland and Mara had been childhood friends, but had grown apart as they got older. They were friendly with each other, but wouldn't consider each other friends.
Despite Mara's secrets and the struggles she goes through, she pushes them away so that her parents can focus on getting Noah on the road to recovery. In these three months, Ryland uncovers more of Mara than anyone has through their late night talks.
