Long before the tragic events on the Day of Black Friday, Alexandra Foster was just a kid. She was in High School, just trying to pass, which proved to be difficult when all of your studying time is spent working to support herself, her little sister, and her alcoholic Mom.

Things take a turn for the worst when her favorite teacher Mr. Houston quits his job, meaning the one class that's keeping her afloat is discontinued, so it is no longer a possibility for her to graduate. Not wanting to go through the hell that is high school an extra year, Lex drops out and decides to upgrade her job at Toy Land to full time instead, a pretty crappy job in the Lakeside Mall in Hatchetfield, with a greedy, creeper of a boss who likes to throw her circumstances back in her face.

At this point, her life could not get any worse, and she has given up on the idea that anything good will ever happen to her in her life. She's going to die alone in Hatchetfield as a Stock Girl...until Ethan Green came into the picture. The two of them find things in common with crap parents and a system that doesn't care about them so they form a fast friendship. But even more than that, Lex, who has spent her whole life taking care of everybody else...finally has someone to take care of her.
