WHAT IS A GASTROINTESTINAL ULTRASOUND?
An ultrasound scan also known as Sonography is a medical test that is used to capture live images from the inside of the body by high-frequency sound waves. Liver Ultrasound is performed by gastroenterologists to look into problems in the liver.
A Gastrointestinal ultrasound allows seeing problems with Liver, Pancreas, Gallbladder.
WHAT ARE THE REASON FOR A GASTROINTESTINAL ULTRASOUND PROCEDURE?
A Gastrointestinal ultrasound is performed if the patient is having pain, swelling, or other conditions that require an internal view of the organs. An ultrasound can give the view for the following internal organs:
Kidneys
Bladder
Pancreas
Gallbladder
Liver
Thyroid
An ultrasound is also helpful during several medical procedures, like biopsies.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR A GASTROINTESTINAL ULTRASOUND?

For an ultrasound, the doctor may ask you to take the following steps depending upon the organ to be examined.
If the abdomen is being examined your doctor may tell you to fast for eight to 12 hours before your ultrasound.
Undigested food can block the sound waves and can make it difficult to get a clear picture.
You may be instructed to eat a fat-free meal the evening before your test and then to fast until an examination of the gallbladder, liver, pancreas, or spleen is held.
Consult with Prof. Gill about any prescription, medications, or supplements that you take before the exam.
An Ultrasounds uses no radiation. That's why this is the preferred method for examining a developing fetus during pregnancy.
