Lauren Schmidt considers herself to be completely ugly and undesirable, and always has. She would go on feeling that way until she gets a letter from a mysterious secret admirer. With somebody else believing in a loving her, she begins to feel the same way about herself. Lauren starts carrying herself differently; talking to more people and being outgoing, raising her hand more in class, making more friends. But one day, the secret admirer will reveal himself. He'll have to, Lauren thinks. But when he does, will she be happy? When the secret admirer stops writing, she starts to enter a slump, and her confidence level goes down. When the secret admirer writes his last note, he says that he wants to meet with her, and he is who she least expected. This secret admirer note completely changed her life; it was all it took.
