After the death of his partner Adrian Gray, DI Lowe enlists the help of Adrian's mortal sister Aurora to go on a journey to discover the secrets of his death while at the same time, being plunged into a secret sorcerer war.

Lowe suspects the dark sorcerer Malignant is behind Adrian's death, and intel tells him Malignant is after the Atavistic Box - a weapon formed by ancient sorcerers thought to be a myth. The Council of Mages think Jensen is paranoid, leaving it up to him and Aurora to fit the pieces together.

Aurora and Jensen must choose allegiances as they meet old friends and make new enemies. They're forced to uncover conspiracies whilst trying to maintain balance in the magical world. Jensen is ready to do whatever it takes to bring Malignant down, but would he be willing to sacrifice not only his own life, but the life of a mortal seventeen year old girl?

“You can’t tell anyone,” she begged. “Please. You just can’t.” “Your secret is safe with me.” Travis assured. Alexa’s eyes popped open in shock. “That is, as long as you leave me alone. No more following me, trying to speak to me, or even looking at me. I refuse to be associated with someone like you. Those kinds of relationships are what get people killed, you know.” As much as she hated Travis now, Alexa didn’t want him dead. She never thought of her living being the cause of someone’s death until this moment. Hell, she didn’t even know her fourteen years had been a crime. “Fine. Deal. Whatever. But if this gets out I know exactly who to turn to.” “You’ll be imprisoned before you can get to me.”
