We all know Crutchie was sent to The Refuge. This is the story of what happened there, written through letters.

Trigger Warnings: young character death, abuse, imprisonment, referenced suicide, thoughts of suicide, neglect, mild cursing. I will post specific chapter warnings, the first one is clean but the rest of them not so much.

This is another story I wrote for my Creative Writing class, I'll be posting the chapters (letters) weekly.

After being stuck in the Refuge for seven years, Jack Kelly's twin sister, Raya Kelly, is finally released after the strike. Race and Albert were present when Raya was brought in to the Refuge barely able to stay in consciousness, but it wasn't the Delancey's or Weisel's doing. As kids, Jack and Raya were abused by their rich parents. When their parents were fed up with the twins far enough, they kicked Jack to the curb and sent Raya to the Refuge where she took care of the Newsies brought in each day. Once the strike ends and the Refuge is shut down, Raya and the other Newsies are released, including the innocent Crutchie. Raya and Crutchie became fast friends in the two weeks Raya had known Crutchie. Once released, Raya has a chance to see the boys who escaped the night she was taken as well as her now seventeen-year-old twin brother, Jack. She never expected to fall for one of the escapees seven years ago. Join this traumatized girl on her journey to healing and reuniting with her brother.

Ten years ago in 1889 there was a little girl at the age of 6 running away and her name was Emma. Emma ran away from her abusive parents and she ran into the infamous Jack Kelly. He was the leader of the Manhattan Newsies, he took Emma in with the boys in the lodging house. Emma soon became known as Tiger, the only Manhattan Girlsie. Jack took care of Tiger as if she was his own blood she was pretty much his sister and every Newsie knew this. Tiger used a special technique to sell her papers just like every other Newsie. Tiger was a flirt and known for it, it was how she sold her papes. Yes Tiger was a flirt but she swore to herself that she wouldn't get into a relationship especially with one of the Newsies but Racetrack Higgins her best friend took that as a challenge. They always flirted with each other but Racetrack wanted more, he wanted to be with her. With Tiger. His Tiger.

Crutch and I stayed up waitin' for ya, the least you can do is tell us where youse been." "I'm fine," Race mumbled, not stopping. Jack quickly stepped forward and grabbed the younger boy's arm, not missing the way he tensed up. "C'mon Race, look at me. What's wrong?" Race slowly turned around, keeping his eyes down with the brim of his hat casting a shadow across his face. "I just had a run-in with a couple of guys who were lookin' for a fight. I got a little beat up. Really, it's nothin'." "It's not 'nothing' Race. You're walkin' worse than I do!" Crutchie exclaimed. Jack grabbed Race's chin and tipped it up and Crutchie gasped. Jack's eyes widened too as he and Crutchie got a glimpse of their brother's face. Crutchie's face turned red with anger, his hand clenching his crutch tightly. "Who did this to you?" *** It's a month after the strike, and everything is going great... until it's not. It starts with small arguments with newsies from the other boroughs, and only gets worse. None of the boys know whats going on, but they're trying to ignore it, until one day something happens that none of them can ignore. A/N: Sorry about the sucky summary, I'm bad at writing those.

Will Katherine's father approve? (Mature rating for suicidal thoughts, sexual assault, strong language, ect. If it was a TV show, it would probably be rated TV-14 or M.) (Don't need to be in the fandom to read. Backstory is very much told and loses the basic plot of the musical after a few chapters in. Perfect if you love historical fiction or historical romance!)
