The year is 2867, the world we as humans once knew is gone, wiped out by the disease epidemic 450 years ago. The disease known as Anthrax spread pretty quickly, it was cured for awhile, but soon it started to mutate and became immune to the cure. It infected both animals and people alike. You had about a week tops the bacteria would release toxins within you and it was over. The mortality rate reached an all time high of 93%. Anthrax, or better known as SI368, is a thing of the past now, everyone is given a vaccine when they are born and before they go Above. They say at one time there were no mutated animals, no colonies to serve with an undying love and commitment. They tell us in school that one day children were let Above, no matter how old we were. There were no Protectors, no Suppliers, just a country called the United States of America. But that country failed, struck down in only 50 years by chaos and disorder, The Epidemic almost taking them out completely. Today it is nothing like that. When our mother’s give birth to us in the Hospital we are immediatly taken Below, there we are raised by the Officials. We go through schooling: all the while observing us, and watching our reactions to certain things. Then when we turn 16, we’re sorted. Its like judgement day. They have finished all their assesments and it’s time to learn whether you are sentenced to a life as a Protector or a Supplier. Everyone wants to be a Protector. No one dreams of being a Supplier, no one wants to be the lesser. We all know it’s inferior, the teachers never say it outright, but it is just known. If you leave your post or are accused of treason, you are executed. Just like that. No one actually knows how, but rumors fly around down here faster than The Epidemic did, children have a wild imagination. But we get the message; You will be punished for breaking the rules. And thats it. This is our world, one we will defend until our dying day. This is The Province.
Elliot Jensen and Elliot Fintry have a lot in common. They share the same name, the same house, the same school, oh and they hate each other but, as they will quickly learn, there is a fine line between love and hate.
