It was fallout and you were almost alone. The radiation caused things to be different, not just the regular "oh people are dead," it caused things to mutate, earn new bodies. This sparked your interest. Specifically, you and your friend, Sven, who found you after fallout, were hearing noises. They were noises that came from sirens, so you weren't really interested at first, just thinking that the emergency system was making its last and final cry for help. But it never stopped. You'd always hear "THIS IS NOT A TEST. THIS IS AN ACTUAL EMERGENCY. SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY TO AVIOD FALLOUT," then several common siren noises. Eventually, you and Sven got annoyed by the constant noise and went to investigate.
