Being the daughter of an Englishman and a Frenchwoman wasn't easy: especially in the midst of war. Denice, whose father is a soldier in the Inquisition, is forced to grow up when her mother dies mysteriously in the night. Nearly sacrificed by the soldiers who protected her in return for quickly diminishing supplies, she is saved by orphans around her age and realizes they are the true meaning of family. When that family is threatened, the best she can do is watch.
