"Ma vie est une énigme, dont ton nom est le mot." -Victor Hugo
My life is an enigma, of which your name is the word.

December, 1729

France was entranced with their young King Louis XV, who had earned the title "Louis the Well-Beloved". King Louis had been married for four years and had his first three children since his marriage at 15, but the same cannot be said for his younger brother Cassius.

Cassius was the insatiable, crude, promiscuous yet handsome younger brother of King Louis XV. He had refused all marriage proposals requested by his brother, and was known for leaving a trail of beautiful young women, worshipping at his feet just hoping for marriage to the young duke.

Zosia was the bright, headstrong, enigmatic yet fragile runaway who stumbled about the frosty streets of Versailles in hopes of finding a scrap of food to eliminate the famine that rose inside of her. The frostbitten, wiry, young woman is plucked off of the streets by a servant family passing through the town and they bring her to their cottage just outside of the Palace of Versailles.

Requesting a job from the king, Zosia believes all will be mended in her life, that is until Cassius sets his sights on her.

The pairing is supposed to give you your perfect partner. A divinely chosen ordained pair. Most nobles forced into the pairing end up matched with a commoner and disowned by their families. Emmeline had come to accept this. The neglected youngest daughter of an overly ambitious father, she had accepted trading her life of luxury for a chance to finally be loved. However, everything goes wrong when she is paired, not with a commoner, but Cassius Marcellus. The nephew of the King and sole heir to the powerful Marcellus duchy, who was forced into the pairing to show royal support for the ancient ritual. Emmeline quickly throws Cassius and his parents' plans into chaos when she refuses to be quietly discarded. She was promised a perfect partner who would love her, and that is what is going to get. ................................ Cassius opened his eyes slowly, his nose still only inches from her's. "Emmie." He slowed her worrying, reaching up to press a rough palm to her cheek. "It's fine." She waited a few seconds to check he meant it, before kissing him again. She moved slowly, as if wanting permission as she lifted one hand up to rest on his good shoulder. He chuckled, meeting her lips and humming happily against her mouth. "I love you too." She finally admitted between kisses. Cassius paused, pulling back to see her fully. "You mean it?" Emmeline nodded, suddenly embarrassed. His answering smile was triumphant. "I will make you the happiest grand duchess this kingdom has ever seen." He vowed, kissed her hard before she could reply.

In the beautiful kingdom of Pola, where freedom, happiness, and joy abounded, there was a strict law that governed the lives of its people. Women were to be courted between the ages of 15 to 18 and married by 19 to ensure the legacy of Pola. Failure to comply meant banishment without any exceptions. Princess Lotus Eloise Adore Florence, the daughter of King Florence, was turning 18 next year, and she had not allowed anyone to court her or asked for her hand in marriage. Her pale skin, long brown hair with a hint of ginger in the sunlight, honey brown eyes, round full lips, and petite body made her the most sought-after maiden in all of Pola. As the deadline for her 18th birthday drew near, King Florence was faced with a difficult decision. He knew he had to set an example for the people of Pola, as the law was not to be taken lightly. Ambrose Clarke, a strong and powerful knight from a neighboring kingdom. The King believed that this union would create a powerful alliance and bring peace to the land. With his curly black hair, brown eyes, and "jock" body, he was the most eligible bachelor in the neighboring kingdom and had been vying for Princess Lotus's attention for years. However, she had shown no interest in him or anyone else. The king called upon his daughter and the young suitor to his throne room, where he made an announcement that shook the kingdom to its core. Princess Lotus Eloise had until the eve of her 18th birthday to accept Ambrose Clarke's proposal of marriage. If she did not comply, she would be banished from Pola forever, never to return. The princess was taken aback by her father's ultimatum, but she knew the law of the land. As the days passed and the deadline loomed closer, Princess Lotus found herself torn between her duty to her kingdom and her own desires. Would she go through with the marriage to Ambrose, or would she defy the law of Pola and face the consequences of banishment? Only time would tell.

But what if love dared to defy law and duty? What if the struggle to be together tested them to the brink of ruin.. or death? This is a tale of passion and peril, of forbidden love tested by betrayal, loss, and the relentless cruelty of circumstance. One between King Francis and Sofia May, his servant, and yet perhaps something far more. ••• He was the only one who ever called me May. No one had ever called me just May. "May," he said. "It's Sofia," I spat, sharp as a whip. He chuckled softly. "I find it amusing that you think I care," he said. "I may call you what I please. And so, you shall be May. Just May. Understood?" He smirked, green eyes glinting with cruel amusement. I loathed him. God, who did he think he was? "Of course, my lord. If that pleases you." I forced a smile, hiding the fire I felt rising within me. ••• "I cannot have you, Sofia May. I am wrong for you," he confessed, his voice low, restrained, yet trembling just enough that I knew the truth lay beneath. "No. No, you are just right for me," I whispered. "I believe that. Don't you?" "I... I do," he admitted, each word a struggle, his eyes betraying the turmoil he refused to name. {Mature

"Eila, I think you forgot, but I have a wife. It is you." After meeting properly for the first time in 12 years, Leon spoke to Eila with a firm voice. "So the heir I'm talking about is the child between you and me." Leon's long, thick fingers ran through her hair. Then he gently touched her face, and his thumb caressed her lips. When her white teeth and red tongue was exposed over her slightly open lips, he looked ecstatic and said. "I hope you will fulfill the obligation of this marriage that you have been putting off, Eila." * * * "Eila." Leon's voice was earnest even though the person he was speaking to was in his arms. Did Eila know? How long he had been waiting for this day. Leon did not let her go from his arms for a long while. The soft touch of her body against his chest and the pounding of her small heart was absolutely lovely. His hands ran through her hair and shoulders over and over again, as if he couldn't believe she was in his arms. It was a careful touch, as if touching the most precious treasure in the world. Traces of his desire which he poured out over and over again were flowing from between her legs. He looked at the traces of himself flowing underneath for a moment. My body only heats up for one person. Only to his wife right in his arms. At court, he is the fool. She is the crown. Their clandestine love is the most magnificent treason of all. Mocked for sport and painted in jest, Laurent is the king's most trusted advisor, a keen mind shrewdly concealed behind the jester's mask. Princess Élodie walks in the day's heavy silks, but sheds the burden of state for the forbidden freedom of plain maid's cloth. This daring escape is made possible by her loyal servant, Sabine, who risks her life by lying in the royal bed. When their furtive encounters blaze into a desire neither Laurent nor Élodie can name, the promise of a political union with King Auguste threatens to cleave their secret world in two. Should Auguste uncover the deception, it will be Sabine, not the Princess, who pays the price. But this court is no stranger to the blade of deception. Its most dangerous secrets are held not by rulers in their gilded cages, but by the hearts of those who serve in silence. In a palace defined by masks, love is a precarious game where the greatest penalty falls upon those who wear no crown.
