Avery Wyatt likes her quiet life in her sleepy South Carolina town and her job as a medium-for-hire, but when her latest clients end up dead, she uncovers a plot to kill the human descendants of the King of Faerie. Against the wishes of her demon mentor, Virgil, her search for the truth takes her to Minnesota where she meets Eli, the son of Puck and the last living descendant of the King.
Eli has friends in low, low places and gives Avery a lift to Bedlam, the hottest nightclub in Hell. They might be looking for information, but the legions of Hell have other ideas, and give Avery an ancient relic in the form of a tattoo, which gives her already-scary powers a godlike boost.
With Virgil's help and the reluctant aid of her cursed ex-boyfriend, Avery and Eli discover the killings are the work of the Watchers, a renegade band of fallen angels banished to Earth a millennia ago. Banned from Heaven and Hell, the Watchers have decided to take out the King and set themselves up as the lords of the earthly realm. With all sides closing in on them, Avery and Eli have to find a way to save humanity without losing themselves.
