One car crash changed her life forever.

Jessica Gilbert was a normal teenage girl, she and her sister were cheerleaders, they had tons of friends, an annoying little brother who they loved with all their hearts, she and her sister were practically twins, and Jessica was the most popular girl at school. Until the night of the bonfire when her parents' car went off the road killing both her parents. Somehow, Jess and Lena both made it out though no one knows how and both end up at the hospital having been brought in from different locations. Jessica tries to get back into her old life but decides she needs some time off so she leaves after cheerleading season to travel the world.

Cut to the start of Elena's Junior year. Elena meets the sexy, mysterious Stefan Salvatore and he makes her feel like herself after the accident but something still feels like it's missing, until Jessica waltzes back into Mystic Falls but somethings different.
