Logan has always had trust issues and he has always been an emotionless brick some would say. He didnt have any real friends, probably because he was the smartest in his class and if anyone wanted to 'hang out' with him, they'd be using him for help on homework. Virgil also had trust issues but they aren't emotionless, actually they have really bad anxiety and depression so they don't trust anyone. On top of that, they are going to a new school.
