L'Accademia Privata Hyakkaou è famosa per ospitare i figli di uomini d'affari, politici e di ricchi e influenti personaggi in Giappone, contando molti futuri leader e professionisti tra il corpo studentesco. Nella scuola, la gerarchia studentesca è determinata dai contributi al consiglio studentesco che sono alimentati da un intricato sistema di gioco in cui gli studenti scommettono le loro fortune gli uni contro gli altri. Coloro che non sono in grado di contribuire a causa dei loro debiti diventano "bestiame": ovvero schiavi per i capricci di coloro che detengono i loro debiti. Coloro che non estinguono i loro debiti alla fine del loro tempo presso la scuola ricevono programmi di vita che ne dettano la carriera, con chi devono sposarsi e avere figli.

La role invece si svolge da tutt'altra parte, in una scuola in Europa. L'Accademia Privata Hyakkaou ha infatti aperto una succursale europea in modo che studenti provenienti da lontano possano comunque godere dei privilegi che la scuola offre. La costruzione dell'edificio è stata terminata quest'estate ed i ragazzi possono finalmente iniziare un nuovo anno scolastico in un edificio nuovo di zecca. Il funzionamento è identico alla controparte giapponese: la gerarchia studentesca è determinata dai contributi al consiglio studentesco ed il potere decisionale è in mano al presidente. Il consiglio studentesco della scuola è formato dai migliori studenti della Hyakkaou, per la precisione coloro che occupano il secondo, il terzo, il quarto ed il quinto posto in classifica. Il ruolo del presidente è stato affidato al primo classificato, il/la quale ha decretato che l'ultimo posto nel consiglio studentesco verrà occupato dallo studente che si mostrerà più meritevole; per questo motivo è stato indotto un concorso per decretare chi riceverà tale onore.

I did the only thing that made sense in that situation. I burst out laughing. I was laughing so hard that I doubled over and when I glanced up at him I just cracked up again. He stood through it all without any emotion on his face, there was barely a glimmer of anger in his eyes. If anything I might have seen some surprise. I patted him on the arm and winked. "You. Are. Funny! I don't need you idiots to look out for me. But thanks for the thought." With that I quickly made my way to class.
