"You can hang a picture on a wall in a gallery, but that's not how people get to know an artist or his work."
- Hans Luijten.
Inspired by my interest in the Post-Impressionistic works of Vincent Van Gogh, my short fiction narrative presents a complex yet intriguing journey; one that positions readers to ponder the problematic reception of art within society. By incorporating a personalised style, and an intimate, albeit ambiguous tone, the reader is embedded into the narrative as the protagonist.
Traversing through the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, you, the reader, become unhinged within the intricacies and beauty of the artworks. However, parallel to these poetic recreations of the visual arts, you find that your receptiveness to beauty also reveals the destructive effects that consumerism has upon the art-world.
Ultimately, you begin to question how art and creative expression can remain authentic in light of commodification, reproduction, and objectification?
As creativity remains intrinsic to our humanity, the speculative differences between possession and experience will determine how your journey comes to a close.
