Lockna lives in a society where everyone is separated by class. A person between the ages of 18-21 can be summoned by the government at any time to be placed into the class where they spend the rest of their life. Every three years, four men and four women are chosen to be Breeders, who are forced to participate in The Trial, a survival of the fittest test that will determine a female Elite Breeder and a male Elite Breeder. The Elite Breeders around the world are the controlled source of population growth and ideal offsprings. Lockna Flynn is a poor girl from the Commons who takes care of her brother, Elias. She is suddenly summoned by the government on the third year to take the Test, the Test to become a Breeder.
