Fidelio is the last survivor of his village. He could very well be the last survivor in his kingdom. But he escaped, and no one knows what lurks behind the stone walls anymore. Murderers and thieves are thrown through the gates monthly, and their cries echo hauntingly across the plains as the beast hunts them down. No one has willingly gone in to try and slay the beast for years. But that is about to change. Shifters who claim to be from the Valley of Guardians arrive in town, claiming to know how to kill the monster within the wall. And to Fidelio's dismay, he is dragged along as the only person to have seen the creature and live. But when Fidelio finally sees the monster again. She doesn't kill him, she saves him.
