Eliza has 'secretly' (everyone knows but Spencer) been head over heels for Spencer since her hormones kicked in.
Spencer has been busy trying to distract him self from Eliza from the moment he realized she was the most beautiful girl hes ever seen.

It wasn't easy juggling his athletics and keeping the grades up, but he was just that good. The supporting parents didn't hurt either.
