In the near future an online RPG has been invented enabling the user to actually play inside the video game. On the official launch day of Sword Art Online the players realise they are unable to log off. Akihiko Kayaba, producer of Sword Art Online tells them this is not a defect, this is how the game was designed to be. They then get told that if they die in the virtual world, they will die in real life. In order to get back home they must must clear the game by defeating the final boss on floor 100.
