Seven years after a suspicious accident, Pen Gwinn lives stranded in Antarctica with holes in his memory. Whatever building he wound up in wasn't any normal facility, and after being manipulated into a science experiment, he'd rather stay stranded until he runs out of food than expose his new powers to the world. He stuck with that for as long as he could, but after the evil that gave him his powers comes back for him, he has no choice but to take a leap of faith back into the modern world.

He finds out that not only does he have awesome super powers, but he is the chosen hero the entire kingdom has been waiting for. I know what you're thinking and no, he didn't pee himself. He had developed super powers. At first, he was in denial, but inevitably came to the understanding that he is now a Super, and if he has powers, he might as well use them for something other than picking up hot chicks. Now, not only does he have to deal with school, his almost non existent social life and his aggravating younger brother, but he also has to fight super villains and learn to control his new found powers to avoid blowing his cover to the world...and it is a lot harder than he anticipated. Prepare for a roller coaster ride of lame one liners and painfully awkward adolescent behaviour, along with bromances and romances, breakups and make ups, and even some cliché superhero behaviour, villains who hold a grudge, and really dorky super suits. Oh... and angry, rampaging squirrels.

I've watched the games for as long as I can remember, but I never thought I'd be in there, fighting for my life, one day. Unnaturals are the curse of the world. They were once people, but in only seconds, they were changed and given unnatural powers. In order to keep them contained, North America creates an arena, a sort of gladiator battle, imprisoning the Unnaturals there and forcing them to fight to the death. And for the humans out there - make one mistake, and you'll be in there with them. Joel has made that mistake. He was caught unintentionally helping an Unnatural escape. Now he finds himself thrown into a world that's completely different from what he was told, and learns two very important things. These Unnaturals are just as human as he is. And there is no escaping the games alive. ... Intense trigger warnings for torture, heavy violence, depression, self harm, and suicide.
