This short story was written for the NYC 2020 Short Story Challenge. I was given three parts of the story to include: the genre of romance, the situation of elderly care, and the character of a therapist. I understand that the situation in this story might make someone uncomfortable and I do NOT condone the act of dating your therapist (it's wrong). I was given a maximum of 2,500 words to write this story.All Rights Reserved

Sequel to Teach Me, Unedited It started with a strange request and ended with a love confession. I thought it would be simple, that all I had to worry about was what to make for dinner but sixteen months into our relationship, I knew how wrong I was. I realized that this was far from the perfect picturesque home I had envisioned. From the beginning, I knew what I was getting myself into or I think I did. I knew how important the hospital was for him, the hours he worked. I saw how much it took him from me and I tried to pretend it was fine when it wasn't. Uncertainty fills my mind with the unspoken words between us. Fear coats my tongue with people meddling in our business, trying to pull us apart to destroy what is already fragile. She works as a clinical psychologist, trying to help others with their emotional trauma, even though she can't overcome hers. Carter Hackney is a psychopath. He can't feel any emotions, nothing. Ever since his traumatic childhood, his emotions have shut down completely. Despite his rough start, he has collected a large fortune for himself as an entrepreneur. Carter wants Emma's help to counsel him out of being a psychopath, and for him to gain his emotions back. Emma wants to heal her emotional scars and prepare to enter future romantic relationships. Their plan is to "date" so that Carter can start to try and feel romantically and be more open with her, and so that she can start to see what a real, healthy relationship is like. Despite her strict rules on not mixing her business life with her personal, the two can't help but feel drawn to each other. Can Emma overcome her past, and learn to be in a loving relationship, and allow a man to romantically touch her? Can Carter get back all of the emotions he thought he'd lost, and start to love again?
