This short story was written for the NYC 2020 Short Story Challenge. I was given three parts of the story to include: the genre of romance, the situation of elderly care, and the character of a therapist. I understand that the situation in this story might make someone uncomfortable and I do NOT condone the act of dating your therapist (it's wrong). She let go of her boyfriend after almost a decade because their love wasn't meant to exist under the strain of children, only to find herself confronted with the overpowering connection of her old high school sweetheart. The same man she ran away from because their values hardly aligned when it came to how love should be expressed long term. Within the midst of learning how to raise children and balance her ever-building career, Agnes tries to recover from her mother's death, seek comfort without complicating her circumstance, and figure out why her mother would name her Agnes. I thought it would be simple, that all I had to worry about was what to make for dinner but sixteen months into our relationship, I knew how wrong I was.
