Klaus Mikaelson, the original vampire-werewolf hybrid, has returned to New Orleans, the city his family helped build, the city from which he and his siblings - Elijah and Rebekah - were exiled a century ago by their relentless hunter father. Drawn back by a mysterious tip that a plot is brewing against him in the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter, Klaus is surprised that the city still feels like home to him despite the decades he's been away. 

Curious as to why Klaus would return to the one place he swore he would never set foot again, Elijah follows his brother and learns that the beautiful and rebellious werewolf Avery Marshall - Klaus' onetime flame and twin sister to Hayley Marshall - has also come to the French Quarter searching for clues to her family history. 

Avery has fallen into the hands of a powerful witch named Sophie Deveraux. When Sophie reveals to the brothers the almost unbelievable news that Avery is carrying Klaus' unborn children (twins), Elijah realizes that the Original family has been given a second chance at humanity and the redemption they desperately crave.

When Méalla's brother Elijah calls her to New Orleans to get their brother Klaus out of a bind, nobody truly knows the extent of what's going on. Méalla certainly didn't expect a pregnant werewolf, or that the baby is Klaus'. As Klaus plots, schemes, and battles to take back what was once their home, Méalla grows to care for Hayley, the werewolf, and tries to learn how to trust her family again. As Klaus puts it, "Witches, dead or alive, are a pain in the ass," and Méalla grows to understand this more than anybody else as impossible things aren't so impossible anymore. Klaus wants war, and power. Elijah wants peace, and redemption. Rebekah wants love, and freedom. Hayley wants to know her history, and to protect her baby. New Orleans, the French quarter brings jazz and jambalaya, romance and poetry but also things that go bump in the night, likes vampires, witches and werewolves, where the ones who rule it all are the vampires, especially the Dragomir family. They were not only royalty but moroi, meaning a kind of vampire that also had magic, where when it came to harvest season the witches decided that the daughter, Vasalisa Dragomir, would be sacrificed, in which her family refused not wanting her to die nor share they're magic with them and so, the witches had them killed and forced the harvest onto Vasalisa anyway. But Marcel Gerard, the vampire who worked side by side with the Dragomirs in rebuilding this city after the Mikaelsons destruction came to save her. And since then he had locked her up in an attic for her own safety, where to many they had thought the Dragomir line had died out, but when the Mikaelsons return back to New Orleans, Vasalisa still being alive starts to create a problem for those who are alive and those who are long dead. Where when a certain Mikaelson who has always had an affiliation for witches, he finds himself falling for the powerful moroi princess of New Orleans.
