Lucy rêve de devenir médecin, mais souhaite ressentir la folie de la vie créatrice en faisant de sa passion, la peinture, son métier. Elle veut aussi comprendre le sentiment incroyable d'être au cœur d'une famille nombreuse, comme sa propre mère qui a dédié sa vie à tous ses enfants.
Pendant trois ans, elle va vivre chacune de ses trois vies. Contre toute attente, son cœur prend plus de place que sa raison et vient bousculer ses choix. Quand elle se retrouve, le Jour J, devant l'analyseur qui va prendre en compte son vote tant réfléchi, son esprit vacille d'un coup : il est trop tard, elle ne peut plus revenir en arrière. L'analyseur a capté la seule pensée furtive. Contre son gré, une seule vie, unique, s'offre à elle.
Lucy va alors entrer dans le cœur du Monde Parallèle et se mettre à dos l'État qui attend les résultats d'une vie qu'elle ne veut pas.
