They were stuck in 2014. They had their friend Addison with them. All of their other friend were stuck with the wights and hollowghasts. Stuck without their friends they struggle to find a place were Emma could stay so she doesn't shrivel up into dust in a couple hours. But the stranger that let them in is way different than they expect. You could say she was 'peculiar'.
