This story WON Australia's most coveted science fiction and fantasy award in 2010: the Hemming Award for Excellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Themes about "otherness" in the human condition. (e.g. race, gender, sexuality etc)
It's now also available as a paperback by HarperCollins, so I can't post the whole story, but I did get permission to keep a post of a large chunk of it here...

For years he has been watching her complete those puzzles with no effort. Finally, Marco decides to push his limits and discover more about her that was being kept from him. The government was hiding more than he thought from its own employees. His brilliant patient at the facility was not normal. Marco continues to dig to find out more about this mystery genius and what more the people he works for have been hiding. ^~^ The puzzles used in this story aren't jigsaw puzzles.
