This story WON Australia's most coveted science fiction and fantasy award in 2010: the Hemming Award for Excellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Themes about "otherness" in the human condition. (e.g. race, gender, sexuality etc)
It's now also available as a paperback by HarperCollins, so I can't post the whole story, but I did get permission to keep a post of a large chunk of it here...
