Anton Szandor LaVey stated in the Satanic Bible that there is real magic in the world but it is not white, black, or any other color. It is simply magic. Another way to look at it is that only Black Magic exists, that is magic powered by personal willpower and selfish interests. Under this view, "white magic" just isn't magic but merely wishful thinking, meaning that it has no bearing on the physical world, or it is black magic all along to the unsuspecting magician. I'd like to posit yet another classification for magic.
One side of magic is Life. Anything that creates, enhances, and evolves. Anything that gives us hope, dreams, and desires. Anything that is perfect or seems to be. Anything that is whimsical. Anything that is certain. Anything that seems eternal.
The other side of magic is Death. Everything that is imperfect. Everything that is hidden and unspoken. Everything that crawls under our skin. Everything that makes us fear and question our sanity. Everything that is uncertain. Everything that ends.
Both sides of magic can be positive or negative. It is all in the eye of the beholder. No part of magic is intrinsically good or bad, beneficial or harmful, happy or sad. Life can be joyful but it also can be tragic. Death can be painful or be comforting, inspiring, and energizing. There can be no magic without Life. And there can be no magic without Death. If we deny one we deny the other. All magic is deceptive. All magic is invisible. All magic is natural. Some magic can be explained. Some aspects of magic can be stronger in some places or in some people. Some magic can be called something else: chemistry, science, psychology. Some magic has been called something else in the past: alchemy, philosophy, heresy. Some magic still has no name. Some decide to call magic something else. And that is okay. I decide to call it magic.
Most of this is sad, any TW will be at the start of them
