William Byers, 16 now in 1985, August, a new school year, being a junior in Derry, Maine, joining a different school as the the first wasn't close enough to home, he's not so happy. He misses Hawkins and hears about it enough from his newly adopted sister. Although he loves her, he can't stand to hear about Mike Wheeler to much longer. It hurts. He misses him, a bit to much. They meet the loser's club. A group of chaotic and quiet kids. Will's not about it.

The Artsy boy in this new school, meets jokester, trashmouth, loser, jazz band guitarist Richard Tozier. It's a rocky start in the mid 80s.
