May 7, 1915.
Abigail Dean and her mother are moving back to England after her father was killed in the war. They are travelling on board the Cunard liner Lusitania, one of the largest, fastest, luxurious and safest ocean liners in the world. During the voyage, Abigail meets and falls in love James Holden, a young business man preparing to take over his father's shipping company, the Boston Line.
The voyage is uneventful, until all the passengers are sitting down to lunch on their last day at sea. The ship is torpedoed and Abigail loses her companions in the chaos on deck
No one in the water could bring themselves to look at the Lusitania as she sank eighteen minutes later.
