Werewolves are considered by most in the wizarding world to be subhuman, not worthy of having the same rights and freedoms that they do. Remus Lupin knows that he's a monster, that he's something to be reviled and feared. He knows that he can never reveal his secret to his best friends, but when he's forced to write 'Monster' in his own blood, keeping secrets is no longer an option.

Remus has always battled with the monster inside him that comes out at the full moon. Ever since they discovered his secret, his friends have helped with his struggle, but they don't seem to fully understand it. And then, on a lark, Sirius reveals to a suspicious Severus Snape the means to follow Remus under the Whomping Willow. He didn't mean any real harm. Sometimes it takes nearly destroying a friendship to realize that it could be something more.
