Artyom, né peu de temps avant le bombardement nucléaire, a été élevé sous terre dans la station de Timiryazevskaya jusqu'à ce qu'il soit envahi par une horde massive de rats. Depuis lors, il vit avec son père adoptif Sukhoi à VDNKh. Quand il était plus jeune, Artyom et ses amis Eugine et Vitali ont ouvert la porte hermétique d'une station au nord de VDNKh nommée Botanicheskiy triste. La porte ouverte a permis aux Sombres de pénétrer à l'intérieur quelques années plus tard, et en raison des événements qui se déroulaient à ce moment-là, il serait considéré comme leur "élu" pour aider les deux espèces à se réunir.
