Victoria Putnam remembers a time when things were peaceful. Unfortunately for her, it is too much of a distant memory to feel within reach. Her long hours working at the local bar are her only ticket to paying her debt, and making sure her brother's hospital bills don't submerge her at the young age of twenty-four. At the first sight of Garrett, Victoria pulls away, instinctively guarding her heart and walking away with every hint telling her that she'd end up with a bruised heart. They were two different kinds of people, in different times in their lives. Victoria is convinced of their inability to work from the start, and wonders why the man with real diamond cuff links would develop an interest in a small town girl with hardly two pennies to rub together.

Garrett Carter counts on his ruthless, no nonsense persona to keep his head above the water. As the the head of his own organization, and the one man everyone around him seems to fear, he has a reputation to uphold. Yet, the moment Victoria Putnam walks into his line of sight, he prays she won't fall into that category. There is something about the brunette with intense eyes that has him thinking further than a business deal, and urges him to continue coming back to the grungy bar she serves at. There were only a couple of problems. The woman who seems to have tilted the axis he walks on is convinced she's under him-- and not in the way he'd like. And her brother? He just happens to be Garrett's enemy.
