Erika Mikaelson is the twin sister of the notorious Original Hybrid known as Niklaus Mikaelson. Before magic made them into vampires, like Niklaus and Elijah; she had fallen in love with Tatia, the original doppelgänger. Erika lost Tatia when she was killed, unknown at the time, by Elijah. Her blood had also been used as the binding agent Esther used in the Original vampire spell and to bind her and Klaus' wolf sides, making them Original Vampires instead of Original Hybrids, at least until they broke the curse.
In the year 2010, Erika is called upon by Elijah and that's when she meets the newest doppelgänger, Elena Gilbert. Erika had gone through so much pain when she fell in love with Tatia and then lost her. Inevitably, Erika falls for Elena just like she did with Tatia. But this time Erika is determined not to lose Elena like she had lost Tatia.
