This story follows the journey of Ebony. She was orphaned as a baby and put in Ms.Henry's orphanage. She has one friend Aqua. But they are about to be separated. Aqua was to be killed.  For 30 years children had to be named after their hair color. The system was put in place so peoples hair colors were easy to know for people thought any "colored haired"people were less than.  But the government thought that wasn't harsh enough. All "colored hair" people were to be killed. The two friends were not going to let that happen.
