Ayla Matthews is one of the defects, a small percentage of the population not under the capital's influence. After being turned in to the Guard by her parents, she was sent to the lab for experimentation. That is, until she was rescued by an odd looking stranger and joined the Broken, a group of defects working to rescue other defects. Now on the run from the Guard and society itself, she must avoid being re-captured so she can help the rest of the defects escape to the Wastelands, a safe haven outside of the society walls. Hopefully before they all get executed.  All while trying to keep up with the mysterious Z, who draws her in with his piercing silver eyes.  Can she and the Broken save the rest of the defects before it's too late? Or will the capital and Guard get to them first.

In the year 2050, post-apocalyptic world, a lone girl must choose between becoming the next-in-line to head a corrupt government or siding with those who wish to see the world a better place. Her family was shocked when the news people started reporting that zombies were actually real and not just part of a horror movie. They were appearing in every country. Her parents reassured her that none of the zombie sightings had been anywhere close to them. Her life is turned upside down when her father ends up in hospital with the bad flu and mother exiles her upstairs for her safety. She was never allowed downstairs again. Weeks pass and the streets become deserted with the exception of the red eyed zombies that wandered around. One night she notices a swiftly moving figure with glowing blue eyes in the street below. Should she call out or remain silent?
