Winter is a time of fear in the village of Njerad. Every year, the villagers wait, locked inside their homes with guards posted at the northern gate. Every year, after the first snowfall, the undirbua come, hobbling from the north, devouring all in their path.
Rachel and Larus are two of the few villagers left. They've lost their parents, and cling to what family they have in the village.
In the winter of Rachel's sixteenth year, a very dear friend is murdered. Stricken with grief, she makes the decision to do something about the attacks.
Torn between the need to be safe in her own home and the rage in her heart, Rachel must decide whether she can stop the pain, or carry on.
