"I didn't hear you." His voice was deceptively soft, still carrying that familiar warmth, but beneath it lay something heavier. Yet despite the sadness in his eyes, his tone sent a chill through my bones.
"With all due respect... you are still my friend."
His fingers tightened imperceptibly on the armrests. "And what do you mean by that?"
"I promised to help you become the King." My voice didn't waver. "But I never swore allegiance to you... Zahard."
Silence. The air grew thick, the weight of my defiance pressing between us like an unsheathed blade. I knew the cost of those words, yet I refused to kneel - not before the throne, not before him.
His eyes narrowed, lips curled into something between pity and cold amusement. He gazed down at me like I was an ant.
"I see..."
