Meet Kvethe, an island youngling whose daily activities consist of pegasus-grooming, dragon-feeding, and hunting. Her goal is clear: complete your jobs to the best of your ability so that you can succeed at the Tidecoming, where you will be selected to be a Rider, Warrior, Keeper or Hunter. Little does Kvethe know, destiny has other ideas. When the arrival of humans threatens the island, she must leave behind everything she's ever known to save her tribe.
