Michiko Tanaka has at last reached the tender age of eighteen, and arises early on the morning of her birthday to complete her family's sacred tradition: the symbolic shaving of her head to signify the shedding of her childhood, eventually to be followed by followed by her hair growing back out to complete her "blossoming into adulthood".
Michiko is ready; enthused, even, for such a drastic change to take place. She's come prepared with all the steps in mind, and needs only to carry out her sworn task: cut her hair to a manageable length, shave her head smooth, and apply the wax afterward. It sounds easy, but unfortunately for Michiko, one minor slip-up could mean the mistake of a lifetime..
