Life as a scribe post-graduation at Oxenfurt Academy is a good one. When your old friend Jaskier comes looking for somewhere to spend the winter, you accept him with open arms and, unwittingly, an open heart.

A reader-insert Witcher series, wherein 'you' are an old friend of Jaskier's from school. Eventual Jaskier x Reader. Part 1 of the 'what we choose to keep' series.

Set in a weird and nebulous timeline where I don't have to think too hard about /when/ things happen, because otherwise I'll never actually get to write this.

This is entirely self-indulgent, and self-beta'd. All mistakes are my own.

At some point before the age of 25, you switch with your future self for a day so you can meet your soulmate. This is known as The Swap. Jaskier has always dreamed about meeting his soulmate, except when it finally happens, it's not at all what he expected. Geralt waited for a Swap that never came. He's lived his life thinking he doesn't have a soulmate. Little does he know the second round of witcher trials messed up the timing. Surely this is all a fever dream, right?

Jaskier was part fae. A quarter to be precise. There was an old superstition among humans that names held power, but for fae it was so much more than that. Names meant control. If you knew a fae's name, their true name, they would be completely at your will. If someone knew your true name you were nothing more than their servant. A slave. All it took was a single command. When war breaks out between neighboring kingdoms, Jaskier's father uses his true name and commands him to marry a witcher as part of a peace treaty. Neither Jaskier or Geralt are particularly happy with the arrangement. But as Jaskier gets to know him better he realizes that the witcher might just be able to give him the thing he's always craved. Freedom.

Fate, a funny thing, isn't it? How it attracts two people together. How events occur. Geralt meets a hunter in the woods, an unordinary person. (Y/N), fascinated by him decided to join him. Destiny has brought them together, though not all of it is for the better. Love stikes both of them, and the more time they spend together, the stronger their bond becomes, and together they'll face tough times. I do not take credit for the world, or main plot, as well as the characters involved. I only own the reader insert and the plot that brings her and Geralt together. All rights of that I don't own go the company that made the show and the writer of the novels. I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I enjoy making it! When a record breaking storm leaves the entire neighborhood without power just before the holidays, Jaskier is saved from freezing to death when his kind neighbor, Geralt (whom he definitely doesn't have a crush on) offers to let him stay over until the storm lets up. A Christmas fluff-packed fic full of mutual pining, bed sharing, found family shenanigans, and Jaskier being horny on main.

Listen. If you don't want a really, really long story full of angst and romance, skip this one. It's rare for me to not write a fic in one go, but this one took me two days to bash out. I have no idea why; the idea teased me, and it just... went in a direction I didn't expect.
