Fragments of Us: A WinterWidow Short Story by KPBwriter
8 parts Complete
The past isn't always buried. After the brutal mission with Leo Novokov, Natasha Romanoff awakens with pieces of her life missing, fractured memories veiled in a fog she can't quite penetrate. Her life as a spy, her history as an Avenger-it's all there, except for the warmth of something she can no longer feel but senses should be there. Bucky Barnes, the man who once knew her better than anyone, has chosen to remain hidden, leaving the love they shared buried for her own protection. Bucky is a ghost in her life, careful to stay in the shadows, but unable to fully let go. Everywhere he goes, there are quiet reminders of Natasha-the faded notes in his journals, the scars they gave each other, the empty side of his bed each night. But he's convinced that to bring her memories back would endanger her, so he lets her go. For Natasha, however, the whispers of her past are relentless. Fleeting fragments of laughter, half-remembered dreams, and the brush of a familiar touch haunt her in the quiet. And as she uncovers old trinkets, redacted files that even her highest clearance level can't access, and glimpses of a man whose eyes spark an unexplainable ache, she realizes that her past holds secrets someone wants her to forget. Driven by curiosity and a deep, instinctual yearning she doesn't understand, Natasha starts to chase the fragments back to their source. And with each step, Bucky finds himself pulled closer, torn between protecting her and wanting her back.

Sequel of Rumors of War, The Immortality War, and Winter's War. Book Four of Five. Set during Captain America: Civil War. .•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•. "I love you, James Buchanan Barnes. Just breathe. Your war is over." I loop my fingers around his, making one small connection as the whole world falls apart around us. Bucky takes my white Lady Liberty helmet off my head, allowing my messy braided hair to fall out. With a small smile, he brushes my dark bangs from my eyes. I close my eyes and lean into his hand. Whatever happens after this, we've found each other again. If that's the only good thing that survives today, I'm okay with that. .•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•.•. Two years have passed since Alexander Pierce nearly fulfilled HYDRA's mission. Two years have passed since the Insight carriers were destroyed. Two years have passed since they discovered that Bucky Barnes was not only alive but has been the Winter Soldier for seventy years. Two years have passed since Emma made the ultimate sacrifice to defeat HYDRA and awaken Bucky within the Winter Soldier. Much has happened in the time she was asleep. The Avengers have fought another threat of their own making and have added new members to the team. Grant Barnes is alive, Steve and Natasha are a couple, and Bucky is still missing. To Emma, everything seems to be the same. But nothing lasts forever. The events of a failed mission force the Avengers to make a choice: safety or freedom. Sides are taken which sever the Avengers down the middle. Things are not always as they seem. Agendas and secrets split apart the Avengers more effectively than enemies ever could. And with a confused Bucky in the mix, the truth about his and Emma's past is bound to come to light: the good and the bad. One secret in particular involves all of them. A secret that will bring the Avengers to their end. [COMPLETED] {Cover by @CaroDelMonte © 2018}
