Lydia Lockwood, a year older than Elena and her gang always knew she was adopted. Her adoptive parents made sure she knew about it so she wouldn't end up resenting them.
Around the time Elena's parents died she started showing strange behavior and weird things happened around her. The Lockwood's always knew something like this would happen so they sent her to a family friend in New York that would be able to help her out.
Once she comes back, she's a completely different person, but so are her friends. Mystic Falls has never been more dangerous, but Lydia is more than capable to take care of herself.
