"I-" Juniper stutters. Her hair, damp from the rain frames her thin face as she swallows her pride and continues. "I'm sorry," she sighs.
Valerie stands in the doorway in complete shock. Even if she did not personally know Juniper Reyes, everyone understood that she never apologizes. Yet here she stands on Valerie's doorstep, cold and wet and in the rain, admitting her fault. And what is said next confirms Valerie's suspicions- that maybe there is more to the school's rogue than her pretty face.
Juniper looks right into Valerie's hazel eyes. "You didn't deserve that."
"Look, I was upset over," Juniper pauses, "something else. You came along, and I took that anger out on you. Still, that doesn't excuse my actions."
A stillness fell between the two girls, and all that was heard were the cracks of lightning.
"Just next time, watch out when you approach me. I'm not known for controlling my tongue."
Valerie looks again at the most viscous girl at Lassette High School. But maybe it was the shocking apology or fact that Juniper's hair was frizzy from the rain, but Valerie wasn't afraid anymore.
"You call that an apology?" Juniper is shocked at the shy girl's response, but feels a sense of relief.
"Call it what you want," Juniper smirks, "but it's all you're going to get from me."
