Excerpt: Her long braids fell across her face. Twinkling through several strands that landed on her nose, her dark brown eyes looked deeply at him, or more into him and pulled at strands of his essence. His eyes flicked up at her suspiciously. Nzinga's face stilled as he inhaled deeply. He tilted his head and smiled "Make sure you pull your weight on the project." "Um - huh?" startled at what she thought was awareness or soft tug back. She recoiled her magic into herself and began packing up her things slowly to not alarm him. "When do you want to meet up again?" "How about Saturday Morning at Busboys and Poets?" Badru suggested. "You pay and I'll be there at 10" she said while walking to the door. She turned around to say goodbye and found him directly behind her. She peeked through her Eye, his aura was a blazing crimson. She quickly closed it, but not before his nose flared. Shit. She reached for the door as his right hand slammed it closed over her shoulder. Anxiety overwhelmed her and her scent leaked out like a predator's invitation. Slowly turning around she looked up into his piercing eyes. His nose was mere millimeters away from her as he leaned down and took a deep inhale. After a moment he stood then opened and held the door. She exhaled her long held breath before walking out. 'What just happened?' She thought. She walked quickly back to her apartment, no one bothered her. Even if they did, she was in her own headspace. She barely noticed that she had reached her apartment door. After turning the bolt lock, she lit her candles and sage and pulled off her coat realizing that she didn't have her scarf. "Damn" she said out loud while undressing and placing her clothes in the hamper in her bedroom. She tiptoed to the shower to avoid the cool floor. Once in the bathroom, she tied her braids into a high bun, jumped into the warm shower and let the water run.

She'd spent many years playing in this forest as a child. While Selene had enjoyed her novels in the warmth of the house, a blanket wrapped around her narrow shoulders, Sidra always came home covered in mud and scrapes from hours out in the wilderness. She'd take an axe out into the forest and pretend to fight off monsters, the terrifying Mystics that her grandmother had told her stories about. She'd pretend to fight Lycans, knocking out their massive teeth one by one. She'd stand atop rocks and throw her axe at the trees, pretending they were wood nymphs come to steal her away. She'd always return home and tell Selene about the monsters she'd fought that day, spinning together a story of courage and bravery for her little sister. She felt that pain in her heart again as she thought of those times. Through the years, she'd stop going into the woods to play, and she'd instead find stories for Selene. Books of all sizes and shapes, no matter the content, because it made her feel close to her sister just as she had before her parents died. She thought of her family now, how she was all alone. Her parents had been gone for years, her grandmother, and now even Selene was missing somewhere. She needed to find her sister, she couldn't lose the last bit of her family. **
