An ancient story of the Serpentines was discovered by the ninjas. An ancient evil older than the Overlord will rise above and usher in chaos. It's power was equal to the First Spinjitzu Master. The ninja must find the new masters of Ninjago before it's too late.

NINJAGO: The Yellow Ninja (Book 2 - Rise of the Serpentine)
It has been a while since Lord Garmadon has been gone through a vortex, but he will return one day. Despite their lack of training, the Ninja encountered a mischievous little boy named Lloyd Garmadon, the son of Lord Garmadon. Lloyd has mistakenly unleashed an ancient race of snake people in five tribes called the Serpentine, which means an ancient evil has been released. Meanwhile, the Ninja discovered a scroll that holds a prophecy of a legendary Green Ninja destined to defeat the Dark Lord and the Ninja, except for Alisa, must figure out who is the true identity of the Green Ninja. As of now, the Ninja must fine a way to stop the five Serpentine tribes from uniting themselves and find the five silver Fangblades that will unleashed the mother of all snakes that will consume all of Ninjago, the Great Devourer! Darkness (Season 17)
(This takes place after crystalized) (I count Uncharted as a season so that's why it's 17) When the ninja defeat the Overlord along with help from all of Ninjago, they are finally at peace. As they help to clean up the mess, they hear of rumors, saying that there is a new darkness from the Dark Island that they have not been to in years. They decide to go alone, without Master Wu, P.I.X.A.L, or anyone. When they get there, they soon realize that it was more serious than they thought. The island was blocked off, and as the ninja realized that they were going to have to fight harder than ever before when they meet the princess, daughter of the Overlord. She and her army steal the ninja's powers and lock them up. The ninja try to escape, but have bigger issues when Lloyd's oni form starts to hurt his health. Can the ninja save Lloyd, get out of the palace to stop the princess, all on their own, without their powers?

What they didn't know was that the great devourer laid eggs but they did find one. They didn't know any better so they entombed the egg in its own tomb, alone.
